Now, visiting Britain might not be as easy as earlier. On Monday, the Prime Minister of Britain, Rishi Sunak, announced “New Visa Rules” to limit migration. The new set of visa rules is strict and will remarkably reduce the number of people moving to the U.K.
Hundreds and thousands of people were traveling to Great Britain for multiple purposes, mainly for residential and employment aid. However, on 4th November 2023, the British government issued a set of new rules. This is expected to cut short the number of immigrants settling in the UK from different countries. If you have also come across the news and wanted to know the details, you have come to the right place.
In this blog post, we will shed light on the “New Visa Rules” and see how and why they are implemented.
Rishi Sunak makes a “radical decision”
In recent years, the country has faced heavy immigrants from different countries. The number kept increasing, and the government was charged on alert. In response to this concern, the British government has laid down new rules to reduce the number of people traveling to the UK annually.
On Monday, Rishi Sunak, followed by the Tory MPs, set new visa standards to reduce migration levels drastically. According to the UK home office, “The move would impact around 300,000 individuals”. Since the visa rules are rigid now, people will face difficulty and no longer be eligible to enter UK provinces.
Additionally, the new measures include raising the lowest wages any migrants should earn in a skilled job. According to Rishi Sunak, net migration levels were high, and he was keen to change it. In a social media post, he announced, “We’ve just announced the biggest ever cut in net migration. No Prime Minister has done this before in history,”.
What Are The New Visa Rules?
Earlier, British visas were readily available because of shallow rules. However, Rishi Sunak was determined to change it to cut down migrants from different countries. According to him, the levels were very high and required immediate attention for the country’s sake.
Given that, here are some key measures announced by Sunak’s Government.
Dependant Visa Restrictions
The British government ended the number of dependants entering the U.K. with the primary applicant. According to them, reducing dependent migration is crucial to the strategy.
Increase in Threshold Increases
The minimum salary wage for overseas workers or settled individuals with family members will increase. The minimum salary for workers may surge by 50%, i.e. from £26,200 to £38,700. Similarly, there is an upsurge in British citizens funding family members.
Health and Care Visa Tightening
Care workers and their dependents will face difficulties in visas. Migrant healthcare workers will now not be eligible to bring dependants to the UK. However, the care providers can involve migrant workers in activities regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
Crackdown on Cut-Price Labour
The Government will eliminate the 20% salary discount for shortage occupations and introduce an Immigration Salary List. The Migration Advisory Committee will review this salary list to align with the raised salary.
Student Dependant Restrictions
The UK government has already taken measures to cut students bringing dependents to the country. This will impact the overall migration by cutting down about 153,000 visas granted as student dependents.
Impact of the New Rules
According to the British Government, these steps reinforce the country’s economy. The government is keen to protect the resources by cutting down additional migrants. Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the UK, believes in welcoming self-sufficient people, contributing to the economy, and not burdening the state.
Yvette Cooper, Labour’s home affairs spokesperson, charged the Conservatives of being in a “chaotic panic” over immigration. She told the Parliament, “Today’s statement is an admission of years of total failure by this Conservative government,”.
Further, James Cleverly, Home Secretary of the UK, announced in the House of Commons, “As part of a stringent immigration crackdown affecting Indians as well, medics on Health and Care visas will no longer be allowed to bring family members”.
New immigration system: what you need to know
The UK government has made it uneasy for the migrants to create a space for themselves in the country. The New Visa Rules are strict and aim to cut down additional migrants who do not support the company’s economy. Given that, here is how the new rules will be commenced:-
- The salary threshold for skilled workers will increase from GBP (Great British Pound) 26,200 to GBP 38,700. This also applies to the family visa category, which is currently set at GBP 18,600.
- According to Rishi Sunak, the new rules will reduce student dependents, resulting in approximately 300,000 fewer UK migrants in future. The plan, laid down by Cleverly, will come into effect in the first half of 2024.
- Cleverly sketched proper plans to examine the Graduate Route visa and protect the UK higher education. This posed a reduction in dependents in that post-study time.
- In addition, the UK government aims to improve the entrance of people in short-staffed sectors, erasing the 20% discount on the lowest salary. The officials will now review the kinds of jobs on the Shortage Occupation List and the Shortage Occupation visas.
- The Office for National Statistics has indicated a total migration of 672,000 to the UK from outer countries. India dominates the most migrants, including skilled workers, medical professionals, and students.
- The number notably increases in the Health and Care visa applications and supported study visa assistance. The government aims to address these trends and ensure a more controlled immigration system.
Home Secretary James Cleverly said
“It is clear that net migration remains far too high. By leaving the European Union, we gained control over who can come to the UK, but far more must be done to bring those numbers down so British workers are not undercut, and our public services are put under less strain.”
“My plan will deliver the biggest ever reduction in net migration and will mean around 300,000 people who came to the UK last year would not have been able to do so. I am taking decisive action to halt the drastic rise in our work visa routes and crack down on those who seek to take advantage of our hospitality.”
James Cleverly’s statement on the New Visa Rules has encouraged people to follow the regulations and accept the government’s decision for the country’s sake.
The UK government has taken a strict decision on VISA grants. Rishi Sunak, the country’s Prime Minister, stated that these rules are imposed in the hope of reducing migrants in the country. On Monday, November 4, he announced the “New Visa Rules” from 2024. The new rules will impact nationals from all over the world, eliminating them from UK boundaries. Health and care visas, skilled worker visas, and student dependent visas faced major transformation.
